Know the enemy. Malaria is caused by parasites transmitted through mosquito bites.

The Deadly Breeding Grounds

Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water โ€” from discarded tires, uncovered containers, and poor drainage systems. These seemingly harmless puddles become factories for millions of malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Removing standing water is one of the most effective ways to prevent malaria.

What Causes Malaria?

Malaria is caused by Plasmodium parasites โ€” microscopic organisms that invade and multiply inside human red blood cells. Five species infect humans:

  • P. falciparum โ€” The deadliest species, responsible for most malaria deaths worldwide.
  • P. vivax โ€” Can remain dormant in the liver for months and relapse.
  • P. ovale โ€” Less common, can also cause liver relapses.
  • P. malariae โ€” Causes long-lasting chronic infections.
  • P. knowlesi โ€” Found in Southeast Asia, transmitted from macaque monkeys.

How Is It Transmitted?

Malaria spreads through the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito. Here's the cycle:

  • An infected mosquito bites a human, injecting parasites into the bloodstream.
  • Parasites travel to the liver, where they multiply silently for 7-30 days.
  • They then infect red blood cells, causing symptoms.
  • Another mosquito bites the infected person and picks up the parasites.
  • The cycle continues โ€” one mosquito can infect hundreds of people in its lifetime.

Symptoms

Symptoms typically appear 7-30 days after the infected bite and include:

  • High fever โ€” Often reaching 40ยฐC (104ยฐF) with sudden onset.
  • Shaking chills โ€” Intense cold followed by profuse sweating.
  • Severe headache โ€” Persistent and debilitating.
  • Nausea and vomiting โ€” Loss of appetite and dehydration.
  • Muscle pain and fatigue โ€” Extreme body weakness.
  • Anemia โ€” Pale skin from destroyed red blood cells.
  • Jaundice โ€” Yellowing of skin and eyes in severe cases.

Severe Consequences

Untreated malaria, especially P. falciparum, can be fatal within 24-48 hours:

  • Cerebral malaria โ€” Parasites block brain blood vessels, causing seizures, coma, and death.
  • Severe anemia โ€” Massive destruction of red blood cells.
  • Organ failure โ€” Kidneys, liver, and lungs can shut down.
  • Respiratory distress โ€” Fluid accumulates in the lungs.
  • Hypoglycemia โ€” Dangerous drop in blood sugar levels.
  • Death โ€” Without treatment, mortality rates can exceed 20%.

Malaria disproportionately affects the most vulnerable populations:

  • Children under 5 โ€” Account for ~80% of malaria deaths in Africa.
  • Pregnant women โ€” Malaria causes low birth weight, maternal anemia, and fetal death.
  • Immunocompromised individuals โ€” HIV/AIDS patients face higher mortality.
  • Travelers โ€” Non-immune visitors to endemic areas are at severe risk.
  • Rural communities โ€” Limited access to healthcare and prevention tools.
